Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The rapid development of digital technology in recent years has had profound effects on entrepreneurship worldwide. In rural areas such as Zuru Local Government Area in Kebbi State, where traditional business practices have long dominated, digital technology has the potential to revolutionize entrepreneurship by providing greater access to information, markets, and financial resources. This has led to an increase in the number of small businesses that can scale and compete in broader markets.

The introduction of digital tools such as mobile phones, social media, e-commerce platforms, and digital payment systems has created new opportunities for entrepreneurs in Zuru to expand their operations and reach customers beyond local boundaries. This study aims to assess the extent to which digital technology has influenced entrepreneurship in Zuru, particularly in terms of business growth, market access, and financial inclusion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing interest in digital technology, many entrepreneurs in rural areas such as Zuru still face challenges in effectively utilizing digital tools due to issues like limited access to infrastructure, digital literacy, and financial resources. While there are indications that digital technology has the potential to foster entrepreneurship, its full impact on local businesses in Zuru has not been fully explored. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating how digital technology is transforming entrepreneurship in the region.

The findings will be valuable for policymakers, entrepreneurs, and development organizations seeking to promote digital literacy and technology adoption as a means of fostering business growth and economic development. It will also contribute to the understanding of how digital technology can support rural entrepreneurship in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Zuru LGA in Kebbi State, specifically looking at the use of digital technology by local entrepreneurs. The research will examine various sectors, including agriculture, retail, and service-based businesses.
